The Crafty Maven Getaway Story

Aloha Scrappers!!

Happy New Year!! I have been taking lots of time this holiday season really thinking about my channel, blog and crafty endeavors and where I want to go in the future. I will blogging about this more on detail later!!

IMG_4088 One thing I know that I want to do this year is create layouts based on the topics we have talked about on The Crafty Maven Getaway Podcast. I love that The Crafty Maven Getaway has been inspiring so many in this great community.

All this thinking about the future and my goals and plans has made me think about the stories I want to tell about what has happened this year. One of my biggest accomplishments this year was creating The Crafty Maven Getaway Youtube Channel. There are still many times I have to pinch myself that I was able to take this idea I had last year around this time and make it come true. To see others excited and inspired is really what makes it even more exciting and totally worth all the time I have put into it.

I have never scrapped this event. I think as a scrapper it is often hard one, to scrap about ourselves. Also though as someone who has started working to inspire others in the community find it odd to really put in into words, maybe because I really don’t want to boast. I didn’t want to let this fear to stop telling this story though. I think in the future seeing how this idea really came to be will be intriguing and fun to read.  I really pondered when would be a good time to actually get this beginning part of my story down on paper. I wanted enough time to have passed to reflect a little, but I also love this thought of telling the details when they are fresh in my mind too.

I also wasn’t sure if any picture would really be the perfect picture to document all that entailed in this story. Then I remembered that I still had the name I had put together for our image. It was perfect.

I also really wanted to make a pretty layout. I already knew that I would be doing the majority of the journaling typed out on the back of my layout. Knowing this really let me focus on making it visually pretty instead of thinking how to fit my journalling in the design. Plus I knew this story wasn’t really all that short.

I did add a little bit of journaling on the front, just in case someone didn’t want to read all my journaling.

I really love how this layout turned out. Maybe it has more to do with the fact that this story is one that means a lot to me. But either way, I love when you finish a layout and am really pleased with it’s end result.

I have a process video on my Youtube Channel, and you can watch it here.

I am going to creating more layouts based on The Crafty Maven Getaway Podcast. This layout is a really good place to start though. I already have plans to include an random embellishment layout and a layout about December Daily (or something like that, I may make it more based on being on my first podcast (Coffee time with Sandy and Lisa) which was about December Daily.)

I am really excited about this series. I love using prompts like these to spark more interest in me, to create something. Many times I have so many photos or stories I could scrap I feel a little overwhelmed. Having a place to start and narrow down my choices jump starts that mojo I need to create a great layout for my albums. Also I like this concept of maybe telling stories I wouldn’t have thought to scrap but really add to my overall album.

I plan to post my Podcast Inspired videos every other monday on my Youtube Channel. The next video will be posted on the 18th. I will have a playlist on my Youtube channel as well.

Have an inspired Week!!!

PS.. To listen to The Crafty Maven Podcast, we are listed on iTunes!!

December Clique Kits Pep Rally Bolg Hop

Aloha Scrappers!! It’s that lovely time again, where the members of Clique Kits get together and share some of the things they creating with their December Girl Cave Kit. At the end of the blog post I will have the line so you can make sure you visited everyone, and so you can continue on in the Hop.

The Girl Cave Kit included Pink Paislee Memorandum. Like always I love this kit, this kit has an amazing acetate piece that has cut aparts with crisp images and bold colors. Gorgeous!!

I feel in love with the aquas in this collection!! I really wanted to play with a monochromatic type of layout. I remembered I had a photo of my son from Thanksgiving and he is wearing a aqua and blue shirt that went really well with the colors in this kit.

My son is so silly! Every chance he gets he is trying to get us to laugh. He is our family comedian!! On Thanksgiving in order to get a serious picture of him I had to let him do some silly photos. I really wanted to scrap this memory! IMG_4490

I really wanted to use white card stock as my background but knew that is needed something to help add a splash of color. At this point I didn’t know what I was going to do with my papers at all. I took some dark blue paint and some aqua paint and created an ombre effect with the paint. trying to stay more toward the middle of my paper. I still wanted white to show, and have peeks of the blue and aqua pop out from under the photos and paper.

After the paint dried I used one of the pattern papers from the kit to border the white paper. I have been liking this technique lately of drawing your eye into the layout. Plus if I cut the middle out of my patterned paper I still get good mileage out of my paper.

I decided to cut many of the blue/aqua and white papers into strips. I was thinking it would be fun to line them close to the sides of the layout. having the papers be lined up opposite on each side.

I added the photos ( I used a 4×6 and 4×4 sized photo) in the middle, overlapping them for interest.

I also added one of the beautiful acetate from the kit to the photo cluster. The gold and cameras were a great match to layout. I added a gold die cute word on the bottom of the picture as well. This helped tie the gold from above the photos.

I then looked through the embellishments in the kit, the cut apart sheet that came with the kit and a few pieces from last months kit. I added these embellishments on the strips of paper on the sides of the layout. I did this instead of the traditional triangle of embellishment. I really like how the different shades of blue, aqua and gold look on the sides of the photos. all the different textures from the embellishments really added a fun aspect that mirrors my son’s silliness.

For the title I added the cutest wood veneer piece ever (a pair of glasses), under the photos. I added part of the alpha’s from the kit, which were Bella Blvd alphas, on top of the glasses. The second part of the title I added under the glasses. I used a different color for the second word, but added one letter the color from the first word. I really love how that looks.

After working on a lot of christmas themed layouts, and my December Daily album, I am really enjoying using this month’s kit. Especially since Hawaii isn’t very cold or have that traditional christmas feel, it is a nice treat. I am hoping to make a christmas layout using this kit too though, for just that reason.

December Daily Thoughts

Aloha Crafters!!

December has been going strong for a while now. And to be honest this is the point where you either are in love with your album so far, or think what have I done?! The craziness of life starts getting you tired.

I hope you haven’t given up yet though!! This lesson I am learning this year working on my album is you gotta do what works for you this year!! This isn’t last year, where I just had one youtube channel to manage, and just a small circle of crafty friends I was sharing with.

This year so much has changed, and so my plans on how I am going to finish my album on time this may need to change, and that is ok!!

I want my album to be fun, because I honestly love christmas time. I have so many great memories that I want this time of year be super special for my kids too. I want them to feel the magic of Christmas.

My plan before was to record most of my process and share it on my Youtube channel. I love Youtube as a sharing platform. I love seeing others being creative and want to share that too. But this year sharing every time I sit down for twenty minutes here or ten minutes there, just isn’t easy.

I took the guilt of having to share every little detail away, I gave myself permission to make my album low key.

What are you doing with your album that isn’t working because you are trying to be a super crafter!! That is totally me, and really it’s an easy way to get burned out this time of the year!

I still plan to share but just not my process. And that is ok!!

It is ok to switch things up and make this process easier on us. This is a busy season and in the end we need to enjoy right?!!

Here are a few pictures of what I have completed so far.

(FYI I start my album after Thanksgiving since that’s when we start decorating, I just have christmas be my last day)

November 27: We started putting up the tree. I focused on that story. I also journaled about how I almost always run out of lights for the tree.

I haven’t decided if I am going to embellish the top Deck The Halls card.

For this pocket I am going to sew or fuse it shut, I just haven’t done it yet. Thus the tape.

November 28:

We finished up the tree. I have more pictures this day, because I took a shot of each child putting up an ornament on the tree.

November 29:

Since not much happened that day, I documented how the girls had a sleepover downstairs to look at the lights on the tree at night. The photos from this aren’t amazing but I really wanted to add them, because I love how excited they were to experience the magic of the christmas tree.

November 30:

Nothing really special went on this day, and I wasn’t sure exactly what story I want to tell. I am thinking about retelling an old christmas memory . All I have is the base page done.

I also have an envelope on the other side of the spread and added the photo of our train under the tree. We try to put this up under the tree every year starting last year.  (Even though I admit that it doesn’t always make it through the season because our children can’t resist touching the train)

December 1:

Before the first I added a picture of the tree all lit up at night. On the other side I added patterned paper, in which I will add typed up journaling about the signs of christmas. This is a prompt from the Journal Your christmas by Shimelle.

This is my photo for December 1st. It is a rainbow in the sky.

I haven’t finished this spread either. I have a cloud/rain 3×4 card from the Wonder collection that I am embellishing in one of the pockets. The other I am thinking of adding more journaling.

December 2:

I seen a prompt from Felicity Jane kit club about Hot Cocoa and wanted to make homemade Hot Cocoa for the kids. Which of course they really enjoyed and welcomed, even if it is warm!! Later that night My Hubby brought home Starbucks Hot Cocoa on a stick, YUMM!!

I have to add the journaling and I may embellish the top card a little more.

December 3:

Not much happened on the 3rd as well. We are in the thick of doing school work before the Christmas Break. I took a photo of the school board with the date on it. I also added a picture of out Nativity set to the back of the hot cocoa photo. I still need to add journaling to this day.

December 4th:

Besides the fact that we did school on the 4th and I recorded The Crafty Maven Podcast about December Daily, not much went on. My Hubby brought home a nice treat of seasonal Blue Moon Beer, which I enjoy during the holidays. IMG_4172

This is what I done on this day. I need to finish up the other page, with embellishments.

December 5th:

On Saturday I went grocery shopping and then we made some cookies.

For this page I actually have the photo on it, but still need to write my journaling. I haven’t decided if I am going to type my journaling out or write it in white pen on the wood grain. My picture is of Mochi, and I am journaling about the cool hawaiian things we get to have during the holidays.

December 6th:

On Sunday we made some more cookies and the kids worked on a gingerbread train. The story I am focusing on is how we are going to start a new tradition the includes everyone in our family picking a cookie or two for us to make during the holiday season. I am going to be printing a recipe out for my Hubby’s pick which were his Grandma’s pecan cookies.

The train I am adding to another day.

IMG_4514 (1)

December 7th:

This day is Pearl Harbor day and I want to add an insert with a picture of Pearl Harbor and an article in which they found an airplane over in Kaneohe Bay, that had sunk during the attack. Since this day is such a big day here I really want to pay respect to it. (I haven’t done this yet, but have it in my christmas journal until I am ready to finish this insert)

I decided to make this day be for the kids christmas lists, even though they had them written out a couple of weeks ago. Over the weekend we had finished buying the big gifts, so it seemed a good day to add this.

In the Starbucks christmas bag I added the actual lists the kids made, even though I did include the photo of one of the lists. (Leilani had written her list way early!!)

December 8th:

We spent a lot of this day at the hospital getting check ups. In my album I actual have the 8th and the 9th switched, because i made a silly mistake with how I inserted my big photos for those days. And instead of reprinting I am just going to have them switched. It really isn’t that big of a deal, really.

For the 8th I still need to make a date card and do the journaling and possibly add something to my big photo.

December 9th:

Since this day is going before the 8th in my album I have this day pretty much completed except a little journaling.

I made a big turkey at home because we ate Thanksgiving at a friends house. My Hubby really wanted my sage sausage stuffing and we still wanted a little extra turkey. It made the house smell yummy and I went all out and made mashed potatoes, stuffing, green casserole and cranberry sauce.

I am also adding the gingerbread train here, to the back of the Starbucks bag. It just seemed to work. Plus I am not sure it really needs tons of journaling.

This is the day card and journaling about me making the turkey.

I am going to journal here about the kids making a wish on the wishbone. This is the first year we had them make a wish on the wishbone.

Sam got the bigger side and he was so happy (Even though he then told us his wish out loud!!) I printed this photo at 8×8 and I love the way it looks. I haven’t decided if I will embellish this photo with anything. I will probably wait until I finish the photo on the other side and then decide.

I have photos for December 10 and 11 printed. but not finished.

I figure quite a bit of this week will have prompts from Shimelle or other places, as filler cards since we did a lot of school work again. I am trying to take photos of our christmas decor and I have a few stories I want to get down as well for these slow days.

I think the important thing to remember about projects like December Daily is to not stress and make sure you are journaling what you want to do your pages about. Even if you aren’t caught up it’s not a big deal.

Also I wanted to share with you The Crafty Maven Getaway Podcast December Daily Episode that came out today!! Katty Miranda, Kelly Barron and I talk all about our December Daily albums.

I am hoping to come back later this week and share some more of my album with you!!

November Clique Kit Pep Rally Blog Hop

Welcome Scrappers!! If you’ve been following the Clique Kit blog hop you just came from Charity’s blog. Welcome!! Welcome!! If yon’t seen all the amazing layouts and projects from the other ladies in the Clique Kit blog hop, there will be a list at the end of this blog post, so you can go back and feast your eyes some more.

This month we received the Tapestry Kit for November, which had mostly the WRMK Wildflower Collection. This collection and Kit is gorgeous and perfect for Autumn. I love all the texture on the paper too. It really inspired me on many of the layouts I made so far.

This month in the store as an add on I spied gelatos! I couldn’t pass them up. It really has been a while since I played with gelatos, and when I got my kit that was what I was most excited to use. They really inIMG_4136spired me on this layout.
I love how gelatos help give you that watercolor look without much work. They are easy to use and easy to wipe away with gesso, if you add too much. They really give a nice mixed media look without having much knowledge of mixed media techniques.

I choose to use three colors that were in my photo, and covered most of the background with the gelatos. I added a little water to mix and activate them. I was careful to clean my big brush so I didn’t mix the colors together though. The colors were a little bright (it’s a little hard to imagine me saying that, right?). The colors were a little neon for the colors in the papers. Though the green was a deep olive green, matching great with my photo.

I used a feather stencil from my stash to wipe off some of the gelatos with a wet paper towel. This helped a little with the color but it still needed to be toned down before I added my paper layers and embellishments. I also carefully added some pearlized white paint, I really didn’t want the gelatos  to mix with the paint I just wanted the paint to cover the color a little and tone it down. I like the shimmery look of the pearlized white and that it is much more translucent than regular white paint.

Lately I have been looking through older family photos. I spotted this old family portrait we took in 2003 for my grandmother. We were still all together in the same area so it is nice to have a snapshot of us all together. Especially afterIMG_4143 many of us have moved away and don’t see each often. We all dressed in Autumn colors and went to a local bridge to get some really nice shots of us near the colored Autumn leaves in the background. Even though I only have this one little photo I still wanted to make sure I scrapped it to put in my album to remember all of them. I knew the colors in this photo would work really well with this kit too.

To try to complement the fact that my only photo is so small (especially on a 12×12 layout) I added a frame off set to the side of the photo. I kept it open, and only added embellishments around the sides of the framIMG_4140e. At first I thought I might add a few embellishments to the middle of the frame, but decided I liked the open space, and really wanted to keep this layout simple. The bows from WRMK’s for this collection were adorable and perfect for this.

I used lots of layers behind my photo. All these layers just make me happy. I even used the glassine the embellishments came in as a layer. I love how all the colors in the papers work together in the layers. They worked really well with distressed and torn edges too. I also decided to use a tag from the cut apart sheet as a layer and added it slightly askew for interest. The feather clips from Pink Paislee really helped add a nice texture to my layers too.

I wanted to add a few extra embellishments and something at the bottom for extra interest. I wanted everything to work together though, because IMG_4137of all the color going on. The bottom I used gold and neutral colors with a wood heart from Pink fresh Studios and some yellow enamel dots.

I added some butterflies with the wings popped up and used green and orange enamel dots to match the colors on the background.

IMG_4142I used the alpha stickers from the sticker sheet for the bottom part of the title with a banner under the photo. The dark blue and gold are so sharp. They worked so well with the Word thickers in gold fro the collection that I bought as an add on. I used the word Lovely as part of the title, and placed it up above the picture. I don’t always like to separate the title but I was hoping this keep your eye more on the photo with it apart like that.

I definitely look forward to creating more with this kit too. I still have plenty more even though I have made quite a few layouts so far.

I  posted a process video for this layout on my Youtube channel. You can watch it Here.

October “Funfetti” Clique Kits Blog Hop: Smile Big

Aloha Scrappers, It that time of the month that I join in with many of the members over Clique Kits and share what I have been making with my month’s kit. This month we are using the Funfetti October Kit made mostly of Pink Fresh Studios Happy Things Collection.

IMG_0021At the end of my post I will have the list of all the ladies who are joining in on the blog hop. I will mark who is next after me as well so you can keep going on the hop. I love seeing everyone’s layouts and projects. It helps me keep up my creative juices for the last bits of my kit left.

This month has been super busy and I haven’t had as much time to scrap, I only made three layouts with my kit. I love how whimsy this collection is though, even if it makes me have to think outside of the box to use. IMG_0026

The layout I am sharing with you today is an older picture of my Husband and daughter inside a military tank. Every year the post we used to live on in Texas hosted an air show, and had tons of jets and tanks. The kids got to go inside the tanks they had out, which was really cool. When they stuck their head out I took a quick picture.

Let’s talk about my background for a second, You ever have a background that you made and then decided not to use, but thought you would keep it incase you wanted to use it later? Well that is what happened with this background. Earlier last week, I painted some yellow paint from an old Clique kit, and some blue Tim HIMG_0023oltz distress paint randomly on a background. The background didn’t work for the layout I made earlier and I just kept trying to use it as a background. I really didn’t want to have to toss it out. But today when making this layout it worked. The blue from the sky matches perfectly with my photo.

Because of all the color, yellow and blue, going on in the background, I decided to keep my background papers fairly natural. This collection has lots of gray mixed in with the other colors. I took one of the gray striped patterned papers and cut it so mostly of the color and shapes weren’t showing. I IMG_0020cut it into stripes and relined them back up on the middle of the layout. I figured I could add my photo on top of that when it was time to add the photo.

I made sure I added a little ink and distressed my strips slightly just to add texture to my layout. I also cut out a few of the boxes of words out of the cut apart sheet. I thought maybe I could use the gray ones and maybe another one with either yellow or teal.  IMG_0024

It took a little while to figure on placement. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do a simple grid design or something else. I decided to add two boxes to the top of the middle strip and one under the strip. Now it was time to figure out my layers behind my photo.

Like I said I really was trying to stick to the gray, blue and yellow colors. Nice and simple because of IMG_0022all the color. I used a gray leaf pattern, a white and multi colored bow tie pattern and a yellow stripped pattern from my stash to make up the layers. The bow tie paper I was careful not
to show the bow ties that had different colors from my layout. I added a blue ombre tag from the kit next to my photo.

I used a cut apart from the exclusive sheet in the kit, which I really like a lot.  I used some of the wood pieces from the kit around the layout, as well as somIMG_3638e bow tie and hearts from the Happy Things word phrase glitter set.

I used Smile Big from the puffy sticker sheet as my title. The Black and
yellow really look sharp on the layout next to the tag.

I ended with some sequins from the Clique Store and a few grey sequins from Pink Fresh Studios.

This layout was fairly simple but really fun to make. I love all the color on my page, it really helps make this story a fun one to add to my family album.

I really hope you had fun today here, and don’t forget to head over to Evi’s blog to see what she created this month.

#Selfie Beauty

Aloha Scrappers!! In my house if I don’t take a photo of myself I am hardly ever in photos. Except for when I am sleeping with my mouth open and my husband thinks thats the perfect time to pull out the camera!!  Do I really want those moments to be what my kids remember of me in photos?! Not really.IMG_3427

Every once in a while I make it a habit to pull those selfies off my phone reel and print a couple to make a layout with. Just so I have a few good photos of me for everyone to look at. Plus some fun details about me that my kids will enjoy reading when they are older.

Plus I love when Itake a selfie and it actually looks good! Half the time I just look silly or goofy! This layout I chose a good selfie that I really like of myself. I have a nice Hawaiian tan and glow about me.
I used some of the Dear Lizzy Documentary Collection, which is my favorite collection right now. I am trying to use it and not hoard it an let it sit in my stash looking pretty there.

I really wanted to keep this layout simple with those pops of color. At first I tried to use yellow paint behind my layers and it just wasn’t working for me. It was too much color and not enough white open space.

I added some black and white printable tags, some coppery little arrows and some glittery gold hearts to add a little more to the layout, but stoppeIMG_3430d there.
Here is how my layout turned out.

You can also watch my process video.

Thanks for stopping by today and checking out what I am up too!! I am hoping to get into a routine this fall/winter and post videos about 4 times a week. I love sharing and I hope that I inspire you.

Have a great day,

Aloha, Hannah

Birthdays are the best: Chocolate S’more Cupcake Recipe

Aloha Scrappers!! The second half of September is always crazy in our house. We have two birthdays form the middle and end of the month, then in the beginning of October it’s my sons birthday. Birthdays are the best though. The kids are such a fun age for birthdays. We try to make them special for them, cooking their favorite meal, letting them pick the type of cake and getting a few gifts. They also get to choose what movies are watched that day too. It is really about the little things with kids, right.

I thought to share something different with you all I would share a cupcake recipe of the cupcakes I made for my daughter, Leilani for her birthday. She picked the kind she wanted me to make and I whipped them up. (Sam wants an Ice Cream cake this year, I think I will buy that instead of making it, but who knows, maybe I will try to make an ice cream cake anyway)

I made Leilani Chocolate S’mores Cupcakes with chocolate frosting. She wanted all chocolate this year, and it was yummy too. I admit though if I was making regular S’more cupcakes I would have made a lightly cinnamon cupcake with the s’more fixing in the cupcake and a marshmallow meringue Frosting. Now doesn’t that sound delicious too?!

I make everything from scratch, but I promise it really isn’t that much harder than a box mix, and it tastes so much better. Since I started making from scratch cakes I will never go back to a box, they just don’t taste right to me anymore. And if you make this recipe I think you will agree with me too. Here is the recipe I made this weekend.

Chocloate S’more cupcakes with Chocolate old fashioned Frosting

Cupcake Batter Recipe
( This chocolate cake batter was adapted from the Betty Crocker’s version of chocolate cake batter, I added a few things to up it’s game)

2 1/4 cups All Purpose Flour
1 2/3 cups Sugar
2/3 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup cold coffee
3/4 cup milk
3/4 cup butter, soften
2 eggs
1tsp vanilla
1/2 cup mini marshmallows
1/2 bag of semi sweet chocolate chips (save the rest of the bag for the frosting)
1/2 crushed graham crackers (this is optional, also I sprinkled them to the top of the cupcake right before baking)

1. Preheat oven 350 F. Line cupcake tins with cupcake liners. I was able to make 23 cupcakes with this recipe, you may have a couple more of less depending on the amount of batter you add to the pan. Set Aside.
2.  In a mixer, cream butter and sugar together until well mixed. Scraping sides to make sure the sugar and butter are mixed fully. Now Add the eggs into the creamed butter and mix well. You will want to scrape the sides down, to make sure the eggs are fully incorporated. I find I like to mix until the mixture looks a little lighter in color too.
3.  In another bowl mix together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda. I like to just use a whisk to get it light and break apart any chunks of these ingredients. You could use a sifter, but I am don’t mind using the whisk and really it usually does a good job getting the ingredients mixed well. Set Aside.
4.  In another smaller bowl or measuring cup, measure out and mix together, the milk, coffee, vanilla, and salt. I like to add the salt here, so it dissolves. I really hate when I bit into a cupcake and get a piece of salt that didn’t dissolve. Set Aside.
5.  This last step you really want to do in no more than three parts, so you don’t over mix the cake batter, or you will end up with tough cupcakes. This also makes not so tasty cupcakes. Add about a third of the flour and mix on low. (You don’t want exploding flour in your face or all over the kitchen) As the mixer is running add a third of the liquid. when the batter is incorporated do this step again. On the last batch of flour and liquid, scrape sown the sides, making sure everything is mixed well. Add the marshmallows and chocolate chips with the flour mixture. Still on slow, mix together and slowing add the last of the liquid.
6.  Everything should be well incorporate at this time. Get your cupcake tins. Now fill the cupcake tins about 3/4 full. I think this is a preference thing though. If you like big cupcakes add a little more batter to the cup. If you like smaller cupcakes, fill it half ways. Just remember if you fill it to high they rise out of the tin and possibly stick to the tin, I hate this which is why I fill 3/4 full. I also like to use an ice cream scoop to fill my pan up too. If you are adding graham crackers crumbs to your cupcakes, now is the time to do it. Just sprinkle the crumbs over each of the cupcakes.
7.  Bake cupcakes for about 20 minutes. When does let cool completely before frosting the cupcakes.
Old Fashioned Milk Chocolate Buttercream

(This is my version adapted from Warren Brown the author and owner of Cakelove)

1 cup Milk
1/4 cup ap flour
2 sticks butter or shortening, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
pinch of salt
2 tsp vanilla
1 Tbsp powdered instant coffee (I like to Starbucks Instant Italian roast)
1/2 bag semi sweet chocolate chips

1.  Make a slurry with the flour and 4 tablespoons of milk. Whisk will and making sure there are no lumps. This is important, you don’t want chunks of flour in you frosting. After this is mixed well whisk together the rest of the milk in a medium sauce pot, and put the heat to medium.
2.  This process is slow going but well worth it, and you won’t be able to leave the stove util it is finished. I use a whisk then switch to a heat proof spatula to keep the mixture moving so it doesn’t burn. This is the point I add the salt too. Again, I hate biting into undissolved salt, yucky! But mix until this mixture is thick and pudding like. Take it off the stove right away after this.
3.  Add the chocolate chips and instant coffee into the hot milk pudding mixture. Stir until all the chocolate melts. Then stick you pot into the fridge while you do these next few steps. It will help cool down your mixture. If you used it hot, it would melt the butter and be no good.
4.  In a mixer add butter and sugar and mix until very light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and mix for 5 minutes. Make sure all the sides have been scraped down so everything is fully incorporated. (I like to use a mix of butter and shortening, I find I like this combo for my buttercream. The shortening helps it not melt as easily and the butter has a yummy taste. But you can definitely use all butter or all shortening. The all butter will be a lot softer and melt faster. I used this for this recipe, and the heat was not my friend. This is something to think about when making this recipe.)
5.  Once your chocolate pudding mixture is at least room temp, but better when colder, at least for this chocolate version, it is ready to add to the butter and sugar. add all the pudding mixture to the butter sugar and beat for another 5 or so minutes on high. This buttercream will smooth right out and fluff up. being nice and light and silky. I really enjoyed the mouth feel of this, almost like a mousse. The chocolate was on the milk chocolate side of taste. A good balance between sweet, milky and chocolate. Perfect for a kids cupcake.

Here is how the cupcakes look!

I hope you enjoyed this tasty treat!! Have a great week!!

Laughter is the best medicine

Aloha!! It’s Hump Day, actually almost over according to my clock!!  I really want to share this layout with you today though!! I made this layout last week. I am using my September Clique Kit which uses the Cocoa Vanilla Hello Lovely Collection. I love this kit, I think so far I have made four layouts, which is really good for me. I have the tendency to make a couple of layouts than need to use different papers or collections so I don’t get bored. But this kit I am just eating it up.  I wished I bought the add on papers, which I didn’t. Not that I need more paper. I have tons!!

I started out this layout in a whole different direction, by painting a background in an ombre backIMG_2916ground. I used one of the pocket page cards that came exclusive to the kit that says life is better when you are laughing. When I read that card I knew the perfect picture for this layout too.

I love this photo of my daughter Leilani, laughing, smiling with that bald head!! I haven’t scrapped many photos when Leilani was completely bald like this from almost two years ago now. It’s a hard time to remember for me, I hadn’t thought at first cutting all her hair off would effect me that much, I mean it’s only hair right?!! But it really did, her hair was so beautiful and long and blonde. It made her seem maybe even more healthy than she really was because at least she had some. But once we cut it off, there was no denying that she was sick, and that the chemo was strong!! I hate that I have to remember that part of life. I mean, who wants to be reminded of these tough times and things we have to go through, especially when we didn’t even choose to go through them. The circumstance choose us, choose ME! And that sucked, but it happened and life went on. Leilani grew, Leilani flourished!!

I think that why this card just had such an impact on my thought process! But it also reminded me of all the laughter that happened in this time too. Even though this was when she had her strongest chemo doses, she also had some of her best IMG_2887belly laughs!

Whenever she had her toys near here, she was always smiling.  They were some of her best friends!! When I took this photo, I remember wanting to try to get her to put the doll down, but she just wouldn’t smile for me. She would only smile and laugh the biggest when holding that baby doll, her baby called brown baby!

That is where I came up with the title which reads Laughter is the best medicine. Without fail, when she was laughing she felt so much better!! I like the way the title looks with all the different fonts. And those Amy Tangerine Thickers are my favorite Thickers!! I love the touch the silver looks with all the pinks and grays.

That pink background I mentioned at the beginning didn’t end up making the cut though!! After I finished my layers on the photo, I just didn’t like the way it looked. It just didn’t feel like me. I find if I am not feeling it, I gotta listen and try something new!!

I am glad I dIMG_2920id, I decided to go for the craft paper with the white hearts. It makes all the difference for the feel. I finished layering the picture and the exclusive card on some black and white dot paper from Dear Lizzy Fine and Dandy. I also added some corrugated black paper from the kit from Fancy Pants. I love the dimension that it gives to my layers, which I will use to my advantage later.

I added a tag, an acetate 4×6 card with Happy on it, and then I found some gold ribbon from my stash to add across the layout. I love the way it looks with the staples in it too. I added those so the ribbon won’t fall off but it just adds one more texture to the layout.

IMG_2917I tucked lots of ephemera pieces into the spaces on my layers!! I added some Vellum  and sticker hearts in the clusters.

I also made a cluster at the bottom of my layout where I used a die cut Ampersand from a die that I had from PinkFresh Studios. I love that die!! It is so fun, it cuts out an ampersand but it also embosses stars and triangles on the inside of the ampersand. So much Fun!!!

I layered IMG_2912some of the gold ribbon from the top of my layout. I put a wood veneer on the ribbon. and another die cut word above the ribbon. I added a butterfly on pop dots. I love how this cluster turned out, it’s just so cute!!

Lastly I added journaling lines for my journaling, which I made all different lengths. I added a couple of hearts on the side of my journaling since the journaling was really important to this layout. I wanted to make sure your eye gets drawn down there too!!

I love how this kit has been so easy to work with, I can’t wait to use it again!! It is perfect for the girls too!!

I also have a process video for this layout to share with you today too. You can watch the video on my Youtube Channel.

I hope you, my scrappy friends, have an inspired week!! May your crafty mojo be flowing!!

September Clique Kits Blog Hop

Aloha Scrappers!! I am so excited to participate in the Clique Kit Blog Hop again this month!! This time on the month is becoming my favorite time of the month!! I love sharing what I have made with my kit so far, but also getting even more inspired by all the other members. It is the kick in the butt I need to finish up my kit, so I can drool over next months kit!!

I will have the line up at the end of this post, so you can follow the hop. Or start at the beginning if you started out here.

I know I say this almost every month but I am so in love with this kit this month. I never realized I like Cocoa Vanilla so much. This kit (The Capture Kit) had most of Cocoa Vanilla’s Hello Lovely. I love the watercolor feel it has, but all the black and gray’s mixed with lovely pink and blue colors, Drool!!   This kit made scrapping my girls so easy! I love when the kit I am using is pretty and so inspiring!!

I scrapped a picture of my girls from when school started, maybe sometime the first week or two. In order to try have a normal routine the kids have to get ready for school by getting dressed, brushing their teeth, putting all their toys away. This day in particular, the girls can running into the school room announcing they were twins that day!! They were dressed in similar clothes and had the same hats on!! It was very cute, so of course I had to take a picture of them. I am so glad I did too!! It’s one of my favorite pictures of them too.

To go along with their playful mood, I used the polka dot paper as the background. I did decide to matte that with a white cardstock and outline the patterned paper with a silver pen to look like stitching.

Also because I can’t help but do some kind of mixed media on my layouts I choose to add some grey color in some texture paste and used a stencil. I used a striped stencil from Amy Tangerine, I figured part of my photo and layers could go over part of the stripes. It would help add dimension to the photo cluster and look cool as part of the layers. The hearts I just randomly placed them around the layout.

As I waited for the texture paste to dry, I wanted to do something with the black IMG_2964crepe paper in the kit. It is a really cool element and I wanted to make sure I took advantage of it. I decided to fish tail the ends and fan it in the middle to add texture as a layer. At this point I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do with it. Just that I wanted it layered partially outside of the bottom of the photo.

I probably should mention that because I love this photo I printed it out at 5×7 so that it would take up more space on my layout!!

I grabbed some of the papers from my kit and started picking out patterns and colors that looked well together. I really have been on a black and white and pink kick lately so I was kinda looking at those types of colors for a couple of patterns behind my photo.

This is the AHA moment happened in this layout!! I remember a piece of toile that I had in my stash, and it was HOT PINK!! Yes, Hot pink! I laid it on top of that black crepe paper and it was perfect!! I then knew I wanted to use the black and pink vellum hearts I bought in the Clique store. I also decided that I wanted to fishtail the layers behind the photo. All these layers were on the bottom half of the picture. I also added a pink and cream paper from the Documentary Add-on from the Clique store too. All these colors and textures looked so awesome together!

I put my picture on pop dots to help with all the dimension underneath. It looked so cool I didn’t want to squish it either. Plus I wanted to be able to peek at all that texture goodness!!

I then went to build my clusters around the layout. I used the stenciled hearts as places to add my clusters. I made three maiIMG_2961n clusters, I usually like the way this looks. I layered vellum hearts from the kit with some die cuts too. I also added some black watercolor hearts and words from the Pretty Little Studio word sheet in the kit.

I added the Title near the bottom cluster. I mixed the Evalicious Puffy letter stickers with some Thickers from my stash.

I love how layout turned out. I still have to add my journaling but I will do that when I put it int he protectors. I will probably add the journaling to the back this time, so it is easy to read but so I have enough space to write this cute story.

Don’t forget to check out the rest of the blog hop!! There are so many talented ladies sharing today!! Here is the line up today:

Really We are better together!!

Aloha my scrappy friends!! I hope your weekend has been nice!! It rained on and off all weekend, yucky. It made it nice Saturday because I was able to work on a few things like some process videos that needed to be edited.  Sharing on Youtube is one of my favorite ways to share my scrapbook pages!! Though when I get busy I sometimes don’t make it the priority I want it to be. But thankfully this weekend I was able to get some free time to get some videos edited that I needed to to post up this week.

The layout I want to share with you today is one I made for the Hip Kit Design Team Call they have going on until the 15th of this month. Even though I haven’t actually gotten any Hip Kits yet I have been tempted so many times!! They always have gorgeous kits, with lots of goodies and all the newest products. Things I think are important for a kit club.

I decided to use mostly the Dear Lizzy Documentary collection, since I absolutely love that collection, it is my favorite collection ever. Seriously!! Plus quite of it is in their current kit along with some Amy Tangerine products. I added some Amy Tangerine Finders Keepers as well. I have both these collections and they are similar in some ways, the watercolor theme is big in both of these collections. I wanted to play up on this fact so I pulled out some watercolors and a blank piece of cardstock and got to practicing.

I am in love with the watercolor brush script like so many others lately and I wanted to add that onto my layout in some way. I have been eyeing a lot of ampersands lately and thought that would be something fun and easier for me to accomplishment on my page. I practiced a few times and then took out a fresh piece of white cardstock. I didn’t add any gesso, I really didn’t think I would need it. I only was adding a little bit of watercolor. I figured it wouldn’t absorb to much into the paper to warp it, in fact the gesso would probably warp it more. I made five ampersands on my page and then added some pink and teal plus signs around the ampersands. I also have this love relationship with plus signs lately. Its all i have to do not to put them on every layout I make lately. Though sometimes I think I should just give in and use them because I love them!!

After the watercolor dried which wasn’t long. I decided I wanted to add a piece of patterned paper going diagonally across the cardstock. I ended up using a black and white watercolor grid type of paper from the Dear Lizzy Documentary Collection. I love how the watercolor feels more homemade. And it matches perfectly with my hand done ampersands. I used a ruler to rip the edges, I didn’t want it to look perfect. The ruler helps make it not to messy though.

I then went on working on the picture and layers behind it. I decided the pic would look the best to my eye, down in the bottom left corner. I did have to cover up the ampersand down there but I figured I could add another ampersand later so I would still have five on the page.  I really do think things look bIMG_2926etter in odd numbers even though they don’t have to be this way.

I used a few papers square and then made IMG_2931a banner with two different patterns for the last layer. I really like how this element turned out. Just something a little unique and fun. I ended up moving the banner and photo so the banner was open to the left side. Thanks I had a photo that it didn’t really matter what side it was turned. It is what makes my job as the family storyteller and historian worth it. When I can share these intimate and loving moments!!

I also decided to use some tags from the Amy Tangerine ephemera pack and an old Dear Lizzy tagIMG_2925 too. I love sticking ephemera in my layers!! It makes them so much more interesting then just cut paper. I thought about adding a bunch of other embellishments in the layers, I love the way different shapes look sticking out, but in the end I only choose a craft xo ox gold foil piece. The other stuff just didn’t feel right.

Up above the photo on the patterned paper I choose a card that says We are better together, I thought this would make the perfect title. I stink at titles most of the time, so if a card or embellishment says what the layout is about, I will use it. Why make things harder on myself right?! This is suppose to be fun, at least for me it is. I found a brush script word Really in the Amy Tangerine embellishment pack, that worked in the title too. So now it reads, Really We are better together.

Under the title card I added a die cut ampersand from Pink Fresh Studios embellishment club. I used a red vellum heart from Seven Paper and the word Cherish in black. I just love this layered look, lots of textures and color!

I added a few more embellishments throughout the layout. adding elements of watercolor and just colors that matched the collection. I finished off with some enamel dots and shapes from various companies from my stash. Then I splattered thinned gold paint and some black Heidi Swapp color Shine. I may have went a little over board on the splatters, it’s hard to stop when they look so pretty. In the end though once it dried I realized it really did go with the feel I was going for.

IMG_2930I actually thought about redoing the background, with less splatters. In the end I choose not to because I really liked all the other elements and didn’t want to mess with that feel I had already accomplished. I think this something you have to think about when you are creating. You can’t be afraid to redo something if you aren’t happy, but on the flip side you can’t loss the feeling you are trying to accomplish that first time you sit down. Sometimes it’s hard to get that the second time around. It just depends. I think that is why I always wait until the next day before I truly decide. The next day sometimes shows something different, a new perspective!!

I journaled in Hot Pink with a paper mate flair pen. I love the look it gives to the words I wanted to convey on my page.

I hope you enjoyed this layout. I hope you were inspired. Let the collections and products you use inspire you to create some of your own elements!! Like I did with my background!

I also have a process video for this layout on Youtube, You can watch it here!!

Also if you haven’t checked out Hip Kit Club, yet I encourage you too! They have a great Kit Club that has tons of fun products and lots of great designers already on the Design Team to help inspire you to use your kits and products!!

Until next time Aloha,
