Art Party Friday at The Crafty Maven Getaway

Aloha My scrappy friends!!

Tis been hard lately, I am not gonna lie. The sunny is shining here in Hawaii and I have had no desire to create. I hate when that happens. Life is busy and at the end of the day, I am too tired to use my brain.

I am trying so hard not to punish myself for not wanting to scrap. We all have lulls. We all get busy, and we definitely all get tired.

Well this week I was up at The Crafty Maven getaway for Art Party Friday. I didn’t even know where to start to tell you the truth. I made a total of two layouts within the last 7 days. So I decided to do a technique I have done before and really like the way it turns out. It is easy. You splatter watered down paint on white cardstock, then use a paintbrush to dab the splatters. You end up with a pretty airy and artsy look. It also is really forgiving.

IMG_5217

I then used a stamp that had x’s for a little more something going on. I was also hoping the black would tone down the fact that I may have overdid it with all the different color paints I used. I really couldn’t help it though. I was inspired by the rich bright colors in the inspiration from The Crafty Maven Getaway.

February Inspiration 1

I love these colors I just didn’t want them so bold on my page, if I could go back I would have not added the orange paint, but in the end I really love how all the colors look on the back ground.

I decided to use the Maggie Holmes Bloom collection, for two reasons, the main reason, it’s brand new and I was hoping that would get my all excited. I love breaking into a new collection and cutting up new papers to layer on a background. this excitement really gets me excited about scrapping. I also really liked how the colors of this collection matched the splatters on my background. Sometimes when they seem to work you need to ride that train. I find thats when a layout starts to make itself.

To be honest that is really what happened with this layout too. I didn’t have the die cuts from this collection, which I am soo bummed about, but it made me have to dig into my stash and find embellishments that could match this collection and feel like they were meant to be together.

IMG_5211

I picked out some teal Color Cast Designs acrylic hearts. I picked out a gold glitter chipboard frame from the Maggie Holmes Shine collection. I also took a couple other chipboard pieces of that sheet as well. I grabbed some black and white puffy geo tags from the new Pink Paislee C’est La Vie collection out too. They just worked together, and fit like a glove.

IMG_5209

When I started working on the layers I knew I wanted them to not be so tight. Lately I have been trying to bring out my inner Jill Sprott and really use layers in a funky trendy way. I cut my layers in different lengths and sizes and almost fanned them out under my photo.

IMG_5206

I did stick to less colors in my pattern papers since I have so much going on in my background. I really also went for different textures and patterns that were bold, like in the inspiration piece.

I love how the chipboard looks tucked under the layers too!! It gives the layout some height which I always like. It helps let you see different angles of the papers and ephemera that maybe you would see if if was all flat.

IMG_5214

I also think it helps with the playful tone of the story that I journal about. This picture is my oldest daughter using a walkie talkie we gave her for christmas last year. We gave one to each of the girls, but the girls weren’t really interested last year at all. The other weekend the girls were cleaning their closest out and found them. They are really into the My Little ponies right now so to have another thing that had pines on it was really exciting. Then they realized they could talk to each other from different rooms, and boy they couldn’t get enough of these walkie talkies!! All weekend long all they did was try to talk to each other from other rooms, up stairs and downstairs, they even tried talking for outside too. It was fun watching them play with these toys, so simple but complex at the same time! I really wanted to tell this story, and put to paper this photo, this smirk of delight that Leilani has!!

IMG_5208

I am really glad I ended up keeping it pretty simple as far as embellishments goes. It really made me have to focus more on how to be playful with the layers. Also with a busy background it really didn’t need much more. I tend to not know how to stop, and I am glad I feel like I am really learning this concept, of less is more!!

You can watch my process video, over at The Crafty Maven Getaway Channel.

Doing this layout, even though it was a technique that was simple and something I have done before really did help me feel like I am catching my mojo. I feel like I want to try another layout to see if that one makes me want to create more. I think that is how mojo works sometimes too. The more you use that muscle of art and creation the more you get that itch to create again.

I am ready to pull out another piece of white cardstock and see what journey that piece starts to take me. See where I end up with that piece of paper, what story I end up telling too. I think that is a good place to be when you end a layout, if you ask me.

Here is one last look at my layout.

Have an inspired Day My Scrappy friends!!

Aloha, Hannah

Mix It Up Monday On The Crafty Maven Getaway

Aloha Scrappers!! I have had a busy and fun weekend and crazy start of the week, it feels like it is Friday. It is only Wednesday however. I really need the weekend to come so I can relax and scrap to destress.

I want to share a project I made throughout last week and shared over at The Crafty Maven Getaway Youtube Channel. If you haven’t heard of The Crafty Maven Getaway yet, you need to check it out. There are so many amazing ladies over there. Everyday there is a new process video of crafting goodness.

On Monday for Mix It Up Monday I made some chore charts for my kiddos. We have been working on doing our on part in our family and giving the kids simple things they can do to help out. I wanted a fun way for them to see what their chores were. I am hoping that the cuteness factor will encourage them to actually be excited to do their chores. (This may be over wishing but a Mom’s gotta try, right?!)

IMG_4998

I used my December Clique Kit for much of this project. I really wanted them to match and look nice together but still wanted them to be different to match my kid’s personalities. The Pink Paislee Memorandum collection was a good fit, with it’s artistic feel but also that office or work feeling too. Plus I really liked the colors in this kit.

I bought mini clipboards at a local store and cut my patterned paper out to fit most of the board. I covered both front and back of the clip board.

I added my kid’s names to the back with the acetate from the kit. I embellished this back side a little with sequins from the kit, from Jilly Bean Soup. I also added hearts from the kit, and some Seven Paper too.

For the chores part, I used my Evolution die cut machine. I cut out some Dear Lizzy Flowers and some different size tags.

IMG_4993

I used the Bella Bvld letter sticker sheet from the kit and also used some smaller alpha’s from my stash. Then I added the chore flowers and tags to clipboards. I added an envelope to one clipboard and twine to another.

IMG_4997

These clipboards were so fun to make for my kids! As scared as I was to use a kit to make them, it was nice to see my papers and embellishments getting used in a cute project. It really feels like I got a lot accomplished when I finished.

I have a video on The Crafty Maven Getaway Channel showing the process of putting these clipboards together. You can watch it here below.

The Crafty Maven Getaway Story

Aloha Scrappers!!

Happy New Year!! I have been taking lots of time this holiday season really thinking about my channel, blog and crafty endeavors and where I want to go in the future. I will blogging about this more on detail later!!

IMG_4088 One thing I know that I want to do this year is create layouts based on the topics we have talked about on The Crafty Maven Getaway Podcast. I love that The Crafty Maven Getaway has been inspiring so many in this great community.

All this thinking about the future and my goals and plans has made me think about the stories I want to tell about what has happened this year. One of my biggest accomplishments this year was creating The Crafty Maven Getaway Youtube Channel. There are still many times I have to pinch myself that I was able to take this idea I had last year around this time and make it come true. To see others excited and inspired is really what makes it even more exciting and totally worth all the time I have put into it.

I have never scrapped this event. I think as a scrapper it is often hard one, to scrap about ourselves. Also though as someone who has started working to inspire others in the community find it odd to really put in into words, maybe because I really don’t want to boast. I didn’t want to let this fear to stop telling this story though. I think in the future seeing how this idea really came to be will be intriguing and fun to read.  I really pondered when would be a good time to actually get this beginning part of my story down on paper. I wanted enough time to have passed to reflect a little, but I also love this thought of telling the details when they are fresh in my mind too.

IMG_4091

I also wasn’t sure if any picture would really be the perfect picture to document all that entailed in this story. Then I remembered that I still had the name I had put together for our image. It was perfect.

IMG_4090

I also really wanted to make a pretty layout. I already knew that I would be doing the majority of the journaling typed out on the back of my layout. Knowing this really let me focus on making it visually pretty instead of thinking how to fit my journalling in the design. Plus I knew this story wasn’t really all that short.

IMG_4087

I did add a little bit of journaling on the front, just in case someone didn’t want to read all my journaling.

IMG_4092
I really love how this layout turned out. Maybe it has more to do with the fact that this story is one that means a lot to me. But either way, I love when you finish a layout and am really pleased with it’s end result.

IMG_4089

I have a process video on my Youtube Channel, and you can watch it here.

I am going to creating more layouts based on The Crafty Maven Getaway Podcast. This layout is a really good place to start though. I already have plans to include an random embellishment layout and a layout about December Daily (or something like that, I may make it more based on being on my first podcast (Coffee time with Sandy and Lisa) which was about December Daily.)

IMG_4086

I am really excited about this series. I love using prompts like these to spark more interest in me, to create something. Many times I have so many photos or stories I could scrap I feel a little overwhelmed. Having a place to start and narrow down my choices jump starts that mojo I need to create a great layout for my albums. Also I like this concept of maybe telling stories I wouldn’t have thought to scrap but really add to my overall album.

I plan to post my Podcast Inspired videos every other monday on my Youtube Channel. The next video will be posted on the 18th. I will have a playlist on my Youtube channel as well.

Have an inspired Week!!!

Art Party Friday: Art Journaling in your Bible

Aloha!!

Today I 11707563_694350685178_6892890875263353675_nhave a video post over on The Crafty Maven Getaway YT Channel. I am really excited because it is my first Art Party Friday post. Since I love using anything media on a layout you would think it would
be a piece of cake?!! Nope! I think that part of my problem was I wanted it to be perfect, and art journaling is more about theIMG_1722 process. The process of learning and playing. I also wanted todo it on a 12×12 piece of paper. Which could have worked, actually it does work, it’s just all that I put on it. There is this fine line to adding to much stuff on your background, and I am still learning that art.

Even though my layout, let’s call it that, because I used a photo on it too. The picture went perfect for the Bible verse I wanted to use as the journaling part (Proverbs 8:27-30). If I have to honest I think this is really where the layout/art journal page took that turn for me. I love the way watercolor fonts look, and that what I tried to do. I wasn’t feeling my paint brush tonight. It didn’t want to stay pointIMG_2651y, and I think this is key for a nice looking watercolor brush font.

I also think I should have picked a better color. I used a black, blue and grey types of colors, but the blue blended in to much with the background. It was very similar to the background colors.

Talking about the background, why don’t I talk a minute about that. I love how a lot of that turned IMG_2652out. I layered some colored cardstock on the bottom, in colors that reminded me of sand and the ocean. After I gesso’d them, I used some gelatos to highlight a few areas. I find I like to do this on art journal pages. It just helps add to the layers of colors and patterns. I used a stencil with colors that mimicked sand first.  Then I used a swirl stencil in teal and blue. It reminds me of waves so this was perfect. I also have a 12×12 stencil that has dots, splats and some other random stuff on it together. It is my favorite stencil!! The splatIMG_2647ters reminded me of the spray of water in my photo. I tried to use more blue acrylic paint with this stencil. I may have went a little crazy with this stencil too. But It really does look like the water is spraying up on the paper above the photo.

The photo is a picture I took just about 8 years ago when my husband and I came to Hawaii on our Honeymoon. It is a place could blowhole, basically it is where old lava fell into the IMG_2644ocean a long time ago and the air bubbles cause tunnels for the surf to come up from especially during high tide. The water sprays out into the air. It is so cool and it is awesome to see just how powerful the ocean can be! Nature is awesome!!
This photo reminded of that verse I shared at the beginning of my blog. I will talk about that more later, but first let’s finish talk about my page.
At this point in my page making process I was feeling like mIMG_2643y page was starting to look dark, and as dark as my photo looked, I really wanted a light and bright look to my page, and I wasn’t getting that. So I added some white paint on the edges and the edges of the cardstock holding my photo. I also then thought maybe some yellow would help, that was a mistake!! It ended up mak
ing my page feel more antique looking than bright and sunny. I think I should have left that out. I have learned my lesson. So to cover this mistake up I added some white texture paste in some spots. Maybe it helped maybe not, it didn’t make it worse.

I added a pattern paper behind the cardstock and picture. The Dear Lizzy Documentary Black, white and grey really makes the photo pop. This redeems my page a little.

Not every art journal page will be our favorites, and seeing that I havIMG_2653e only made
a few, in much smaller scales I am quite happy with my page. Plus I was able to add some shells we have collected from our beach trips to the page, and that looks cool.

Really the thing that I love is that, doing this page forced me to think about why I wasn’t doing this in my Bible in the first place!! This journey this page took me on brought me closer to facing my fears in art. I was afraid to journal in my Bible. I didn’t want to ruin my beloved Bible. LOL!! I am laughing at this. If you know me at all it may seem so silly. I am not afraid, of much. And to be afraid of a bible is even more crazy. Ruining one page in my Bible will not make me a bad christian or make God love me less. I won’t hIMG_2639ate me less, well maybe for a second, but then I will get over it. So what was I waiting for???
About half way through this layout, I pulled out my nice study bible, because it has great bargains, and my name all pretty on the cover. My Hubby bought it for me our first christmas married, with my new name! My husband went to college to be a pastor and he and I share a love for studying different versions of the bible, so this was special and fun. Through the years of our marriage the Lord has shown me many amazing scriptures in this Bible, so really it is fitting that I use it to do art journaling in.

I grab my gesso and acrylic paint and went into no mans land! Actually it was so liberating using my products on my Bible. I used a couple of stencils on the side, in the colors (minus the sand color) that I used on my big page. I totally love the way it turned out!! I mean WOW!

Now that it is all finished I wished I had taped this process and used this instead of my bigger page, but really that would be dishonest. It would me not sharing the journey I took to get this diamond. In the end it is the journey we take on our art journal pages that matters not the end result. Yes I love when it looks amazing the first time, or comes so easily, but it’s when we have to try and work hard that we grow IMG_2641and learn.
I added a little texture paste to help keep it light, I wanted my bible journal to mirror what I tried to accomplish on my big page. And the stencil looks like water spray anyway!! Like I said it went with the verses I was wanting to highlight. I love how God explains how he knew who we were gonna be like before we were born, that he cared for us and brought us with him, when he created the earth and seas. How we were at his side being his craftsman in this amazing world he created for us to enjoy.

These words just resonate with me right now. Coming to Hawaii as a young child of 7/8 it really impacted my life. I fell in love with this paradise. But I never expected to really come back. And I love how God has orchestrated things soIMG_2637 that I could come back here and enjoy it as an adult. When we found out we were moving here just about 3 years ago, I was teaching a ladies bible study and
I remember God telling me he was allowing us to come here, because I would have never asked, and he knew my
heart. Like WOW!!

Yes, coming here has been bittersweet with my daughter getting cancer right before coming but I think Satan knew what this place meant to me and he tries to steal and destroy the things we love. But I never let him take my joy, and these verses remind me of that and God has made me his craftsman.

IMG_2638

I know I have gotten really personal, but I feel like in order to share my work my stories are part of the things I create. I am a crafts man or better said a woman!! My stories are what make me me and part of the reason I chose what I do creatively.

I am really glad I took that scary leap of journaling in my Bible. It really is what I love about this crafting session. I now plan on doing more art journaling in my bible too. I may make some pages I don’t care for but if I am focusing on the journey and the words I will love it more anyway and learn.

I am writing this blog as my video is getting ready to upload, the pre uploading stage.  When it is ready and up on the Crafty Maven Getaway YT Channel I will link that video here so you can see my processIMG_2636

I hope this weekend you crafters take that leap you have been afraid to take!! Remember sometimes we make it worse by overthinking things and so
metimes when you actually leap you don’t fall!!

If you do something crafty this weekend and want to share it I would love to see what you create!! I am only Facebook and instagram, my links are in the about me section. Here is the link to The Crafty Maven Getaway Destination group I created for the YT Channel too, which I am a big part of.

Until next time, have an inspired weekend!!!
