Cooking with Grammy

Aloha Scrappers!! How has your week been? Mine, very productive in real life stuff, but very little scrapping done. But that is life sometimes right?! And since I need to sleep, I figure I should just roll with it. Next week will be a new week.

I posted a new layout on my Youtube Channel that I want to share with you. I am trying to use up the last little bit of my November Hip Kit from 2015. It is christmas inspired, and since I still have christmas photos to scrap it makes me happy that I can use up old supplies.

These photos are your typical my kids baking christmas cookies. I really like to see how each year they grow a little older and bigger. These photos are actually a few years old, from 2012. So my girls look so little, especially Cayden. They were so happy when they were making these cookies too. My mom, dad, brother and his at the time girlfriend (who is now his wife) came to spend a christmas at our place. It was really nice. We hadn’t all been together in a few years and it was the first time I was actually meeting his girlfriend.

The girls love baking, and really enjoyed baking with Grammy. My Mom of course was loving it and soaking in the chance to do something special with her grandchildren.

The triangle paper from Hip Kit really inspired me. I grabbed a small Amy Tan stencil with triangles. I pulled out some coral and copper paint and painted triangles on a diagonal across some white cardstock.

I knew I needed to bring in some cool colors like mint or aqua. That guided me as I picked my papers for layering. I used two photos, one 4×6 and a 3×4 size. I almost didn’t use two, only because the color tone on them were different. One photo looks bright and has a cool color tone. The big 4×6 of Cayden has more of a warm tone to it. I am not sure if this happened from the printing process. I didn’t really edit these photos though. They were taken and edited by my sister in law with her very nice camera. I took that from my Facebook account.

I guess it’s time for a confession, I use old Facebook photos on my layouts a lot. over the years and before I scrapbooked I didn’t make the effort to keep digital copies of my photos. So most of our baby photos of all three of our children are only on Facebook. Sometimes the quality on Facebook is great. Sometimes its not, especially when the photos are older and not taken on good cameras. I wish I had saved my photos differently, but I didn’t and it is all I have, so I use them.

Back to the layout…

I built a cluster at the bottom, using the tags from the kit, a paper strip ( a thing I have been doing lately), glitter tape from the December kit, an envelope from my stash, and those adorable penguin and balloons from the PinkFresh Studios die cuts. I love how cute it looks.

Now if I had thought things through better, thats where the stick it down and commit rule isn’t as nice. But if I was thinking, I would have added my cluster at the bottom with triangles. It isn’t horrible the way it is, but there is an awkward gap that could have been avoided but I didn’t think about that until after I glued down the penguin, and he was stuck!!

I needed to balance the top and I added a small cluster at the top of my layout. I used a gingerbread button I had from my stash and a Elle’s Studio banner from last christmas, that I cut down.

IMG_4883

I added Studio Calico wood grain sequins and blue crystal sequins to add a touch of blue throughout the layout more.

IMG_4881

I will admit I almost forgot to add a title, altogether. I have been bad about that lately. I think it is more about just wanting to finish up and then I remember that I really should have one. I used the PinkFresh Studios puffy alphas from the kit, I didn’t have enough for the whole title, so I spelled out Grammy. I used some copper cursive alphas from an old Pink Fresh Studios embellishment kit I had leftover. They are perfect, they really work well with the copper paint I used on the background. I also used some block Bella Blvd Faith Illustrated alphas in blue.

IMG_4884

I added my journaling around the outside of the layout. I really like the way this looks. It brings everything into the layout and it really is easy to incorporate the journaling unto the layout without looking really out of place.

Here is a look at the process video for this layout.

It feels really good getting through some of my older christmas photos, and using up my old kits. I still haven’t touched my January Hip Kit, and man it is so pretty!!

Have a great weekend my scrappy friends!! I hope you enjoy your time, whether you are crafting or not.

The Sweet Life

Aloha Scrappers!! This week I have been super busy, my poor computer has barely had a chance to rest!! But I don’t mind, it definitely keeps me out of trouble and then it means I get to share things with you too!!

Today I am sharing a layout I made with my December Hip Kit. I actually made this layout near the beginning of December, so maybe three weeks ago. But December got busy and I wasn’t able to get everything I wanted to done. I am glad though, in a way. I really like how this layout turned out.

Now I feel like I give it the attention it deserves when I share this with you. I love all the bright colors from this kit. The yellows and pinks were perfect for a girl layout.

IMG_4440.jpg

I took an old photo of my daughter Cayden, and made two copies. A bigger 4×6 size and a square 3×3 size. These photos weren’t the best quality, they came from my Facebook account. I am letting go of the fact that I want perfect photos though. In the end it’s about telling these fun stories and sharing these cute moments that I do have. And Cayden just looks adorable and has that I love getting into trouble look. She wore this look often as a small child. She loved looking like she was trouble when she was just exploring and playing. She still has that look these days but sometimes uses it for more mischievous works!!

IMG_4446

I really wanted to have fun with these papers and go with this playful theme. I layered my papers a little different, but it really does help in the mood I was setting. Even if this process took me a while, since I didn’t know how I was going to get there.

IMG_4448

Once I layered small bits of papers behind the photos. Adding the embellishments came really quickly and everything just flowed nicely.

I added the chipboard Zebra to go with the playful and youthful look. But really he is so cute, even if he has nothing to do with the layout itself. Sometimes you just need to embrace the random!!

IMG_4445

I painted the wood veneer yellow to match the papers. I don’t usually do this, because I really tend to like the natural look of wood on a layout.

IMG_4441

I added more hearts in an L type form around the photo. This really just happened as I was scrapping, I love when layouts pretty much make themselves. I thought they would look better this way then the standard three groupings though.

I added some of the rub ons from the kit in matching colors to add some color throughout the layout. I want lie though, those were hard rub ons to use so I abandoned that work pretty quick. I grabbed some acrylic paint and added splatters for that color I was looking for. I like the combo of flat color from the rub ons and the texture from the acrylic paint.

IMG_4422

The gold thickers really added that last touch this layout needed. Plus who doesn’t like gold?! Even though the title isn’t out of the box, I really don’t mind. Sometimes the titles just come to you and are well thought and sometimes it works better to just use what you have. Otherwise you spend an hour trying to be creative and you could have spent that hour making another layout. I pick and choose my battles. This layout I picked getting down a cute story and photo.

I added my journaling on the back, since I really liked this black and white with pops of pink and yellow. I didn’t want to mess with that fun design either.

I also have a process video sharing how I put this layout together. You can watch that here.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today! I hope you have an inspired weekend!!

Really We are better together!!

IMG_2924

Aloha my scrappy friends!! I hope your weekend has been nice!! It rained on and off all weekend, yucky. It made it nice Saturday because I was able to work on a few things like some process videos that needed to be edited.  Sharing on Youtube is one of my favorite ways to share my scrapbook pages!! Though when I get busy I sometimes don’t make it the priority I want it to be. But thankfully this weekend I was able to get some free time to get some videos edited that I needed to to post up this week.

The layout I want to share with you today is one I made for the Hip Kit Design Team Call they have going on until the 15th of this month. Even though I haven’t actually gotten any Hip Kits yet I have been tempted so many times!! They always have gorgeous kits, with lots of goodies and all the newest products. Things I think are important for a kit club.

I decided to use mostly the Dear Lizzy Documentary collection, since I absolutely love that collection, it is my favorite collection ever. Seriously!! Plus quite of it is in their current kit along with some Amy Tangerine products. I added some Amy Tangerine Finders Keepers as well. I have both these collections and they are similar in some ways, the watercolor theme is big in both of these collections. I wanted to play up on this fact so I pulled out some watercolors and a blank piece of cardstock and got to practicing.

IMG_2928

I am in love with the watercolor brush script like so many others lately and I wanted to add that onto my layout in some way. I have been eyeing a lot of ampersands lately and thought that would be something fun and easier for me to accomplishment on my page. I practiced a few times and then took out a fresh piece of white cardstock. I didn’t add any gesso, I really didn’t think I would need it. I only was adding a little bit of watercolor. I figured it wouldn’t absorb to much into the paper to warp it, in fact the gesso would probably warp it more. I made five ampersands on my page and then added some pink and teal plus signs around the ampersands. I also have this love relationship with plus signs lately. Its all i have to do not to put them on every layout I make lately. Though sometimes I think I should just give in and use them because I love them!!

IMG_2929

After the watercolor dried which wasn’t long. I decided I wanted to add a piece of patterned paper going diagonally across the cardstock. I ended up using a black and white watercolor grid type of paper from the Dear Lizzy Documentary Collection. I love how the watercolor feels more homemade. And it matches perfectly with my hand done ampersands. I used a ruler to rip the edges, I didn’t want it to look perfect. The ruler helps make it not to messy though.

I then went on working on the picture and layers behind it. I decided the pic would look the best to my eye, down in the bottom left corner. I did have to cover up the ampersand down there but I figured I could add another ampersand later so I would still have five on the page.  I really do think things look bIMG_2926etter in odd numbers even though they don’t have to be this way.

I used a few papers square and then made IMG_2931a banner with two different patterns for the last layer. I really like how this element turned out. Just something a little unique and fun. I ended up moving the banner and photo so the banner was open to the left side. Thanks I had a photo that it didn’t really matter what side it was turned. It is what makes my job as the family storyteller and historian worth it. When I can share these intimate and loving moments!!

I also decided to use some tags from the Amy Tangerine ephemera pack and an old Dear Lizzy tagIMG_2925 too. I love sticking ephemera in my layers!! It makes them so much more interesting then just cut paper. I thought about adding a bunch of other embellishments in the layers, I love the way different shapes look sticking out, but in the end I only choose a craft xo ox gold foil piece. The other stuff just didn’t feel right.

Up above the photo on the patterned paper I choose a card that says We are better together, I thought this would make the perfect title. I stink at titles most of the time, so if a card or embellishment says what the layout is about, I will use it. Why make things harder on myself right?! This is suppose to be fun, at least for me it is. I found a brush script word Really in the Amy Tangerine embellishment pack, that worked in the title too. So now it reads, Really We are better together.

IMG_2927

Under the title card I added a die cut ampersand from Pink Fresh Studios embellishment club. I used a red vellum heart from Seven Paper and the word Cherish in black. I just love this layered look, lots of textures and color!

I added a few more embellishments throughout the layout. adding elements of watercolor and just colors that matched the collection. I finished off with some enamel dots and shapes from various companies from my stash. Then I splattered thinned gold paint and some black Heidi Swapp color Shine. I may have went a little over board on the splatters, it’s hard to stop when they look so pretty. In the end though once it dried I realized it really did go with the feel I was going for.

IMG_2930I actually thought about redoing the background, with less splatters. In the end I choose not to because I really liked all the other elements and didn’t want to mess with that feel I had already accomplished. I think this something you have to think about when you are creating. You can’t be afraid to redo something if you aren’t happy, but on the flip side you can’t loss the feeling you are trying to accomplish that first time you sit down. Sometimes it’s hard to get that the second time around. It just depends. I think that is why I always wait until the next day before I truly decide. The next day sometimes shows something different, a new perspective!!

I journaled in Hot Pink with a paper mate flair pen. I love the look it gives to the words I wanted to convey on my page.

IMG_2921

I hope you enjoyed this layout. I hope you were inspired. Let the collections and products you use inspire you to create some of your own elements!! Like I did with my background!

I also have a process video for this layout on Youtube, You can watch it here!!

Also if you haven’t checked out Hip Kit Club, yet I encourage you too! They have a great Kit Club that has tons of fun products and lots of great designers already on the Design Team to help inspire you to use your kits and products!!

Until next time Aloha,

Hannah
